I am a third-year computer engineering student with an interest in entrepreneurship and software as a service. This is my first co-op term, and I have learned so much in the past 3 months. I am extremely lucky to be working as for web developer for a finance start-up called Currenxie, where we do online transactions for businesses and online merchants. I learned a lot from working with our website and web app that works very similar to Facebook, and I also had the experience to work in the exciting dynamic/fast pace environment of a start-up.
I think an international work experience would likely have influenced my studies and future career plans the same way any other work experience would have. However, being in a totally different place like Hong Kong has made me change my mind about a lot of my future plans. I got to try new things every day, meet new people every day, and that really opened me up to tons of possible paths that I would have never realized before.
I have always been a country boy, so I am really loving the environment and the scenery of a big city. The view by the Victoria Habour or on top of the Peak is definitely lived up to its reputation. Also, I really like the convenience of the city. Octopus cards (the payment cards) and MTR (the metro) have been a quality of life and have really brought the engineering nerd out of me.
